How To Remove Food Smells From A Chef’s Uniform

Unfortunately, fabric is known to absorb odors, which means that chef uniforms are a veritable breeding ground for all kinds of food smells that like to fester and become unpleasant. If you have spilt food on your uniform and have noticed that the fabric has retained the odor of that substance, you might be interested in ways that you can remove it.

Step 1: As soon as you have spilt food on the uniform, use a butter knife to scrape away as much of the stain as you can, then blot at the area using a piece of paper towel (never rub, as this makes it worse).

Step 2: Before washing your chef uniform, you should thoroughly inspect each of the pieces for stains. If you notice anything, make sure that you use a waterless hand cleaner to blot at the stain from the inside of the clothing to prevent rubbing it further in.

Step 3: Wash the clothing as per usual, making sure that you use warm water and a non-scented enzyme detergent (you can even find cleaners that are designed for greasy stains). You may need to repeat the wash to completely get rid of the stain.

Step 4: To help eliminate odors that the uniform may have attracted, you should dry it outside on the clothesline in bright sunshine. Never put the clothing in the dryer if it has been subjected to stains, as the heat will set them in permanently.

If your chef uniform has been subjected to some stubborn food smells that don’t seem to dissipate even after a number of washes, you could sprinkle the clothing with calcium carbonate crystals, activated charcoal or baking soda. Leave the uniform for up to four hours before shaking the crystals out.

What are Honyaki Kitchen Knives?

Knife
Honyaki kitchen knives are traditional Japanese chef's knives used for various different tasks in the kitchen. A honyaki set can include utensils for slicing (takobiki), sashimi preparation (yanagiba and deba), vegetable chopping (usuba) and eel preparation (unagi), as well as an oyster knife, spike and tweezers. Modern Honyaki kitchen utensils are commonly crafted from aluminium or stainless steel for strength and durability.

Each Honyaki utensil has been specifically designed for a particular purpose in food preparation, such as filleting fish or making julienne strips. These designs have been honed and adapted over hundreds of years of expert use, making the utensil you hold in your hand today exceptionally suited to cutting, slicing, dicing or hacking apart.
Honyaki utensils were originally formed from the same carbon steel used to make katanas, the traditional, deadly swords used by Japanese Samurai. Carbon steel is very hard and brittle, making for a precise, sharp and effective cutting edge to the utensil. Today, the more expensive sets feature a similar construction, with an inner core of carbon steel mostly surrounded by a layer of soft but corrosion resistant steel.
Some solid carbon steel honyaki utensils are still being manufactured and sold, however, and have a very elite following of professional chefs and Japanese cultural pedants. Because these models have a singular construction, they typically retain a sharp blade for much longer than other frequently used utensils. This is useful because they can be very difficult to sharpen and should be taken to a professional sharpener or skilled chef for maintenance.

Choosing Cleaning Supplies for Public Bathrooms

It is important to keep public bathrooms well stocked with cleaning supplies and hygiene solutions in order to promote good health and a high level of maintenance through any establishment, whether it is an office, a hotel, school, or shopping centre. These solutions include items personal items such as hand soap and toilet paper, as well as sanitary bins, mops and chemical formulas for maintaining the space.

The most important personal supply in any public bathroom is the hand soap and you should choose this item with care. To encourage a healthy space, choose an hand soap that effectively kills germs and prevents the spread of diseases. In order for the soap to do any good, however, you will need to maintain a high level of hygiene in your public bathroom sinks. Hand washing in a contaminated sink can actually increase the number of micro-organisms present on your hands!

If you want to go to extra lengths to make sure the public toilets under your care are comfortable and enticing, you could provide a moisturising or foaming soap that leaves hands feeling soft and supple. Moisturising soaps can also provide health benefits, as soft, well nourished skin is less likely to become cracked and grazed and open to infection.

When choosing cleaning supplies for toilets, sinks and floors, you should choose products that are fast acting and can be used quickly to produce an impressively clean effect. This is particularly important for bathrooms that are open for twenty four hours a day, as you don't want the space to be closed for maintenance for a large portion of the day.

What To Look For When Buying A Knife Cutlery Set

There is a large variety of knife cutlery sets on the market, especially if you are looking for one that is suitable for commercial use. Each set will be made out of different materials, will have different edges and will be purchased with different warranties. To ensure that you are making the right purchase, however, there are a number of things that you should be looking for when it comes to cutlery:
  • How many knives do you need?
If you are after just a general cutlery set, you will need at least one of each of the following: a chopping knife, a bread knife, a peeling knife, and a filleting or boning knife. Some steak knives may also be useful.
What sort of material is the blade?
The most common (and highest quality) material for blades is stainless steel, as it resists corrosion, is strong and is relatively cheap when compared with other materials.
  • What sort of material is the handle?
The material used for the handle of your knife is actually very important, as a subpar handle could cause the blade to become loose, which causes serious safety hazards. Micarta and titanium handles are the best choice.
          • What is the design like?
The rivets (which join the blade to the handle) should be of a similar quality to the blade to ensure that they hold; the tang (which is the part of the blade that goes through the handle) should go all the way through on both sides.

Whilst there are a number of knife cutlery sets on the market that are of exceptional quality, there are an equal number of sets out there that are subpar or of very low quality. By answering the above questions and keeping the accompanying tips in mind, you can ensure that you only buy cutlery sets from the former category and not the latter.

How to Choose Kitchen Knives for Cheese

If you will be offering a cheese plate at your next dinner party alongside or instead of a dessert course, then it is important to set up the plate correctly for your guests' enjoyment and your peace of mind. You might think that selecting the correct kitchen knives for a cheese plate is a stuffy and overly formal activity, but it is actually essential to making sure that your party goes smoothly, and that stinky but expensive blue cheese doesn't go flying across the room!

Some people like to forego the rustic feel of hunks and wedges on a plate surrounded by crackers, choosing instead to slice or dice the cheeses before guests arrive and arrange the pieces, pierced with decorative toothpicks, on a tray for guests to nibble at.

We feel, however, that this misses the true appreciation of freshness and variety that a tasty cheese plate, complete with the correct kitchen knives for cutting and portioning, offers. It is also often easier for guests to cut their own pieces of Camembert or Blue when presented with the proper utensils.

So if you choose to present your cheese plate in the traditional method you will have to select the accompanying utensils carefully to satisfy both practical and aesthetic needs. Simple, elegant handles are preferred over chunky and overly decorative forms as these can be distracting and difficult to manipulate.

Choose kitchen knives that are sturdily built and provide for a clean, steady slicing motion. Remember also that you will require different utensils for soft and sticky cheeses as well as hard and tough cheeses.
