How To Remove Food Smells From A Chef’s Uniform

Unfortunately, fabric is known to absorb odors, which means that chef uniforms are a veritable breeding ground for all kinds of food smells that like to fester and become unpleasant. If you have spilt food on your uniform and have noticed that the fabric has retained the odor of that substance, you might be interested in ways that you can remove it.

Step 1: As soon as you have spilt food on the uniform, use a butter knife to scrape away as much of the stain as you can, then blot at the area using a piece of paper towel (never rub, as this makes it worse).

Step 2: Before washing your chef uniform, you should thoroughly inspect each of the pieces for stains. If you notice anything, make sure that you use a waterless hand cleaner to blot at the stain from the inside of the clothing to prevent rubbing it further in.

Step 3: Wash the clothing as per usual, making sure that you use warm water and a non-scented enzyme detergent (you can even find cleaners that are designed for greasy stains). You may need to repeat the wash to completely get rid of the stain.

Step 4: To help eliminate odors that the uniform may have attracted, you should dry it outside on the clothesline in bright sunshine. Never put the clothing in the dryer if it has been subjected to stains, as the heat will set them in permanently.

If your chef uniform has been subjected to some stubborn food smells that don’t seem to dissipate even after a number of washes, you could sprinkle the clothing with calcium carbonate crystals, activated charcoal or baking soda. Leave the uniform for up to four hours before shaking the crystals out.

Be Stylish With Chef’s Uniforms

Whenever we think of chef’s uniform, a white double breasted coat comes in mind. The uniform of chefs needs no explanation for identification as it has formed a stagnant image that anyone can put in plain words. So, should we consider that chefs have no choice and that they cannot escape from their same old fashioned, dull and unappealing outfit which is known as “chef’s uniform”? Of course not.
Today, the garment fashion is intervening into every profession, providing an assortment of fashionable outfits for every professional, be it executive employee, computer professional or even a chef! Let’s take color of the uniform first. Milky white color of the uniform is the worst offender when it comes to its maintenance. Although, it can be bleached and washed with an effective detergent, but that makes additional expenses for dry cleaning or simple cleaning to remove the stains. Due to its vulnerability to the stains chefs cannot wear them for more than once.
Moreover, it is also not possible for them to be attentive all the time to prevent stains.
It is not necessarily required that you have to stick to white color, just because it is a symbol of cook’s cloth. There are choices for off-white, grey or navy blue in coats. Many even prefer cherry color to make the food stains unnoticeable. Similarly, there are choices for trousers, like checkered style or simply black and white strips. When styles for chefs uniforms are designed, the comfort and ease is given top priority, because there is no point of wearing a uniform that restrict you perform your tasks.

What Is The Importance Of A Chef’s Uniform?

Have you ever wondered why cooks wear a particular uniform? While the traditional white chef’s uniforms do promote a sense of professionalism that restaurant owners like to see, each item actually has a specific purpose in mind.

The white jacket is one of the most common items of a chef’s uniform that you will come across. It is double breasted, which allows for reversing if the front becomes too stained or if the chef is going out into the main restaurant area. It is also made out of cotton, which helps the chef’s body to breathe and to be insulated from the heat in the kitchen.

The pants of a chef’s uniform have traditionally been covered with a black and white checkered pattern. This pattern is important, as it is able to hide small stains. These days, the pants of the uniform are generally worn baggy, as this allows the chef easier movement and also enables their skin to breathe.

That hat worn as a part of a chef’s uniform is called a toque blanche, or just a toque for short. Traditionally, the height of the toque symbolized the rank of a chef in the kitchen, but these days it is more for aesthetic appeal. The main purpose of the hat in the uniform, however, is to stop hair from falling into the food during cooking.

Chefs wear aprons as they provide an extra barrier between their uniforms and any spills that may occur. It is easy to remove a soiled apron if a chef is required to enter the main restaurant area, leaving their uniform as pristine as possible. Aprons are generally tied in the front of the waist because this allows quick removal if the material should happen to catch on fire.

The growth of the hospitality industry has led to changes in the design of some chef uniforms – there are now items of varying colour and pattern on the market that can happily be worn along side the traditional white.
